Prof.
Weizhi Ji is the director
of KIZ and has a long experience in reproductive and developmental biology
on non-human primates, ranging from oocyte
maturation, embryo culture and nuclear transfer in experimental animals,
and embryonic stem cells. Also as the deputy director of Primate Council
and the member of standing council of the Chinese Laboratory Animal
Society, Prof. Ji has been extensively involved
into establishment and development of Primate Research Centre in KIZ in
relation to experimental animal models used in reproduction, nutritious
ecology, immunology and infectious diseases.
Prof.
Yong-Tang Zheng is the head of
Laboratory of Molecular Immunopharmacology at
KIZ, has over 10-year experience in Virology and Immunology particularly
the study of HIV infection using animal models. His laboratory has over 20
research scientists including senior scientists, postdoctoral fellows, PhD
students and technicians. Some of the research scientists are trained as
Veterinary doctors.
KIZ has played an
active role in international interdisciplinary programs focused on
biomedical research to solve significant human health diseases in which
non-human primate is an appropriate choice of animal model. Since the
outbreak of SARS in China
early this year, KIZ has built the first P3 laboratory and facilities with
the capacity of holding 18 monkeys in the same time. It is funded by both
the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Ministry
of Science and Technology of China for the purpose of SARS research in
animal models. Since 1959, the institute has set up colonies for rhesus or cynomolgus macaques and now rear over 1000 monkeys.
Given the privilege of animal resources, the Institute is therefore able to
play an indispensable role in developing bioconcepts
in the Network programme for SARS research.
